Last month, the French company launched the device in Europe, with an announcement in the United States likely soon. This is a newer version of the company’s original sleep tracking mat that includes a few added features.

According to Withings, after three days of use, more than half of users get an extra 48 minutes of sleep per night for the next three nights. Not bad, considering how many individuals suffer from chronic sleep deprivation.

With no buttons to press and a constant on-hand, this appears to be a no-fuss option for ensuring you get enough shut-eye. Is it, however, as amazing as it sounds? Over the last two weeks, I put it through its paces.

Withings is renowned for its cutting-edge health and fitness products. It is a pioneer in the field of wearable technology, with roots reaching back to 2008. We’ve seen some fantastic goods from the company over the years, so we have high hopes anytime it releases something new.

It was the first to sell a WiFi linked scale and one of the first to release a connected blood pressure monitor, for example, and some of the health information captured by its products has yet to be replicated by other wearable tech businesses.

Around two years ago, the first Sleep Tracking Mat was revealed as a renamed version of the device that was released under the Nokia banner. To refresh your memory, between 2016 and mid-2018, Nokia owned Withings.

Now we have the next-generation product, which resembles its predecessor in appearance. The Sleep Analyzer can also be placed on the side of the bed at chest level. There’s nothing to do or wear. Simply place the 25” x 7.5” mat under your mattress and plug it into a power socket.

This is a fantastic notion because you don’t have to remember anything. Other stand-alone sleep monitors are available, although many of them require manual activation. You won’t have to deal with any of it here.

It’s always possible to hide it under the carpet.

The pad itself is quite spacious, which is a positive thing. The mattress in my bed is 52 inches wide and 6 inches thick. Because the pad is only about half that length, I decided to try it out and not place it on the very edge. As a result of this, I was able to sleep on either side of the bed. Regardless, the stats were accurately recorded by the pad.

However, for reliable results, make sure it’s at chest level. However, because the sleep tracker is designed for one person, you’ll need to keep it by your side if you’re sharing a bed with someone else. Anything else will result in a muddle. Also, if someone sleeps on your side of the bed after that, the Sleep Analyzer will assume it’s you. All such devices have this weakness in their design. If this happens, you may always erase the entry from the app.

Although the setup procedure is simple, it takes roughly 10-15 minutes to finish. You’ll need to download the Health Mate app if you’re a new Withings user. I’m already a user of their smart scale and a few other products, so this is already setup. This is the app that Withings uses to control all of their smart devices, including fitness trackers and blood pressure monitors.

After that, go to the Devices page of the app and pair the device. For me, the process was painless, and the sleep tracker was directly connected to my home’s WiFi source. When the Sleep Analyzer detects your presence on the bed, it cuts off the Wi-Fi connection automatically. It only comes to life when you get out of bed.

The calibration procedure is the next stage. You have nothing to do but wait for roughly 10 minutes while making sure no one is lying on the bed. A small whirling sound will be heard. I’m not sure what this does, but according to Withings, it’s a requirement for the device to learn about your bed. When the calibration is complete, you will be notified. This is a one-time procedure that you will not need to repeat unless you decide to relocate the pad or move it to a different bed.

Taking everything into account, I truly appreciate the design. You can forget it’s there because it’s connected to WiFi and has a power source. There are no buttons to press and no details to recall. Simply follow your normal sleeping schedule and check your numbers in the morning or every few days using the smartphone app.

The Sleep Analyzer functions almost as an extension of your bed, which is exactly what you want from a sleep tracker. to function in the background quietly. The only thing that will remind you that it’s there is the cable.

When you get up in the morning, the Sleep Analyzer connects to your WiFi network and syncs your data with your Withings account. This way, when you launch the app, everything is ready for you to look at.

The information is extensive. What I found fascinating was that, in addition to tracking sleep throughout the night, the device was also very good at detecting naps. It recorded anything from a quick 4 minute snooze while reading a book to naps lasting an hour or more. This was quite helpful to me because I have a habit of sleeping late, waking up early, and compensating with an afternoon nap.

My fear was that simply lying in bed would result in a “false positive.” But, without fail, the Sleep Analyzer was able to tell the difference between when I was sleeping and when I was simply lying in bed listening to music, reading the internet, or doing something else. It’s actually rather impressive in terms of determining whether or not you’re awake.

The device, as expected, offers precise information on sleep cycles (deep, light, and REM). It doesn’t end there, though. A pneumatic sensor, which detects your breathing rate and body movement, as well as a heart rate sensor, are included. Furthermore, the device employs a sound sensor to detect snoring and communicate the number of snoring episodes as well as their lengths. Finally, the Sleep Analyzer is medically approved for sleep apnea monitoring.

To keep things simple, your summary begins with a single digit that indicates how well you slept. Everything is color-coded and ranges from zero to one hundred. The Sleep Score can be monitored on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

Then there’s the data on sleep heart rate. The technology is so delicate that it can measure your heart rate (peak, lowest, and average) without even touching your body. I was particularly interested in this statistic since I was skeptical that it could be done accurately.

I compared the data with a Fitbit on my wrist every morning for about a week (which also tracks overnight heart rate). The two occasionally matched perfectly, with the largest nightly variance being roughly 2 beats per minute. When you consider that the Sleep Analyzer analyses your heart rate through a thick mattress, that’s rather astounding! The difference between the two was barely 1 bpm on average during the week.

The device also features a microphone that detects snoring. When I go to sleep, I occasionally listen to YouTube or a podcast, and this has had no negative impact on my snoring function. I don’t snore much, according to the statistics, averaging about 9 minutes every night.

While all of this is impressive and fascinating to read, the important news is that the device has been medically certified to diagnose sleep apnea. This makes it the first non-invasive sensor capable of detecting the conditions on the globe.

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes pauses in breathing or bouts of shallow breathing while sleeping. These can last anywhere from a few seconds to many minutes and occur frequently throughout the night. There may be a choking or snorting sound as regular breathing resumes. Some people are so troubled by the illness that they are awakened frequently during the night. It’s possible that it’ll put your life in jeopardy.

I had no idea that practically everyone suffers from sleep apnea to some degree. I didn’t sleep well most nights, but on a few occasions, I was given a positive AHI score. I also discovered that the Sleep Analyzer provides sleep with a weird competitive edge. I can’t help but feel like walking is pointless if I leave home without my fitness tracker. Why should I walk if the device on my wrist isn’t keeping track of my steps? I’m having the same sleep-related ideas now. I once took a nap on the sofa and cursed myself for not remembering to utilize the bed, which was equipped with a sleep analyzer.

How accurate is it, and how does it compare to the competition?

The sleep tracking sector is becoming increasingly competitive. Everything from fitness bands to stand-alone sleep monitors falls into this category. The Apple Watch appears to be the only popular wrist-worn device that does not currently measure sleep (although this may change in the near future).

Fitbit has a similar feature, but only for naps that last longer than one hour.

The Sleep Scores varied, which is understandable given that each organization has their own unique method of measuring the statistic. I discovered that the Withings score fluctuated more from day to day than the others, indicating that it has an algorithm that is more rewarding or rigorous depending on the night.

It’s difficult to assess accuracy without doing a sleep study in the lab. Although there was a lot of correlation, such as heart rate, time to fall asleep, and time to wake up, all four devices revealed slightly different information.

The most significant changes were found in the sleep cycles and the length of sleep outcomes. I believe that part of the issue is that I am a light and restless sleeper. In addition, when I go to bed, I usually listen to music or listen to a podcast. This is a bad habit since it causes you to drift in and out of sleep for part of the night. As a result, the most significant variations occurred during the light sleep period. There was a stronger link between Deep and REM scores (apart from the Garmin). I’m more confident in Sleep Analyzer’s ability to track light sleep after seeing how good it is at catching naps.

The Health Mate app has a feature that allows you to increase the sensitivity of the sensors. I didn’t find it necessary to use this because the gadget did an excellent job of recording all of the data.

IFTTT allows you to automate your home.

Finally, for the technophiles among us, the sleep pad includes an IFTTT connection for automating specific tasks. This helps you to smarten up your bed. You can manage lighting, thermostats, and other smart home gadgets, among other things. Getting in and out of bed might trigger a variety of home automation scenarios. The Health Mate app is used for all of this.

To use them, first create an account on IFTTT and then download the various applets. Consider these to be little software programmes that enable specific functions.
