We explain what a temperate climate is and what its characteristics are. Also, how is its classification, flora and fauna.

What is temperate climate?

The temperate climate is a type of climate that presents relatively moderate monthly average temperatures , with temperatures above 10º C in the warmest months and above -3º C in the coldest months. The average annual rainfall is between 600 mm and 2000 mm.

The temperate climate regions are usually located between those with a subtropical climate and the polar ones, that is, the areas between latitudes 45º and 60º north and south, respectively. They are regions in which the four seasons of the year occur.

In the temperate climatea wide variety of plant and animal species tend to develop , and it is the most favorable type of climate for the development of human activities, such as agriculture, industry and residential life.

Characteristics of the temperate climate

The temperate type climate is characterized by:

  • Have a moderate monthly average temperature.
  • Present four well-differentiated seasons of the year.
  • Present seasonal rainfall, especially during the winter.
  • Allow the development of a wide variety of vegetation, such as large grassland prairies and forests .
  • Allow the development of several animal species.
  • Present the right conditions for the development of civilization.
  • Extend from the Arctic Circle to the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere, and from the Antarctic Circle to the Tropic of Capricorn in the Southern Hemisphere.

Types of temperate climates

The temperate climate presents a wide variety of environments within its category and four main types are recognized:

  • Mediterranean temperate. It is characterized by long, dry, sunny summers and short, moderate winters with abundant rainfall.
  • continental temperate. It is characterized by the temperature range between summer and winter, with hot and rainy summers and cold and dry winters.
  • Warm wet. It is characterized by long, very hot summers with abundant rainfall. Winters are short and moderate.
  • oceanic tempering. It is characterized by spreading in maritime areas. Temperatures are usually cool and there is abundant rainfall in winter.

Fauna and flora of the temperate climate

Fauna and flora of the temperate climate

The temperate climate presents adequate conditions for the development of flora and fauna. Among the main features are:

  • the flora It presents various types of grasslands and trees, such as oak, conifer and larch. It allows the formation of jungles , dense forests and grasslands. In addition, it is conducive to the development of various crops manipulated by man, such as corn , quinoa, wheat, vegetables, fruits, among others.
  • The wildlife. It presents various animal species that have adapted to migration to avoid the coldest times and some also have the ability to hibernate to tolerate winter, such as bears, squirrels and opossums. Some typical animals of the temperate climate are: moose, lynx, pampas deer, bat, field mouse, puma, fox , cardinal bird, and eagle .
