Airlabs is a group of atmospheric scientists, airflow engineers, and designers that are based in London who are committed to reducing the negative effects of air pollution. By establishing clean air zones in some of the most polluted places in the world, the goal of the company is to lessen the likelihood that people will be exposed to toxic air.
A Kickstarter campaign for Airlabs’ very first consumer product, which will assist families in staying safe, has just been launched. It is also the first product of its kind to remove polluted air from the interior of a vehicle, including Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Particulate Matter. Within just five minutes, according to the manufacturer, Airbubbl can eliminate more than 95 percent of NO2!
This is a relatively modest organization, but they have a very significant goal in protecting people and a strong desire to do so. Sophie Power, CEO of Airlabs, joined us for a conversation about the problem of air pollution as well as the upcoming launch of the company’s product on Kickstarter.
What exactly is an airbubble?
The Airbubbl is the first device that has been shown to be effective in removing Nitrogen Dioxide and any other form of pollution from the interior of vehicles. It produces a bubble of clean air inside of your vehicle, which shields you and your loved ones from the hazardous air pollution that enters your vehicle through the air vents, particularly the diesel emissions that are produced by other vehicles.
What is the function of the Airbubbl?
The Airbubbl draws filthy air from the interior of the automobile cabin and channels it into the middle of the unit, where it is processed by Airlabs’ patented filtration technology and our extremely efficient particle filter.
How did you think of the concept for the product in the first place?
Because we knew that Airlabs’ technology was the only one that had been demonstrated to successfully remove the harmful levels of nitrogen dioxide from the air, we felt it was our responsibility to create the Airbubbl in order to lessen people’s exposure to pollution in one of the most significant sources of it: the interior of automobiles. We have high hopes that our solution will not only mitigate some of the unfavorable consequences of being exposed to pollution but will also encourage urban families and individuals to pay more attention to the state of the air they breathe.
How does Airbubbl stand out from the other companies in its field?
The Airbubbl is the only in-car air cleaner on the market that is capable of removing nitrogen dioxide from the air in an efficient manner. In October of 2017, we carried out laboratory tests in London, and the results showed that levels of Nitrogen Dioxide increased significantly while sitting in traffic. After turning on Airbubbl, the NO2 levels in the vehicle dropped by 67 percent in less than three minutes, and they dropped by more than 95 percent in less than ten minutes.
What do you think will be the most difficult obstacle for you to overcome?
Pollution in the air is the biggest danger to human health posed by a global environmental issue. The greatest obstacle we encounter is people’s lack of awareness of the dangers associated with being exposed to air pollution and their perception that they are in a protected space while they are driving a car. We are making efforts to raise awareness, but this is something that must be a collaborative effort between the public sector and the corporate sector, as well as efforts made by citizens themselves, in order to raise awareness on such a significant matter!
Where does pollution get its start, to speak on a more broad level?
The quality of air inside your vehicle is directly proportional to the level of pollution produced by the vehicle in front of you. Instead of removing pollutants, your vehicle’s air conditioner actually drags it inside with it. Nitrogen dioxide, volatile organic compounds, particles, germs, viruses, and odors are among the primary components of pollution that are eliminated by the Airbubbl filter system. Burning diesel fuel in autos is the primary contributor to elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide in urban areas.
So, what measures can we take to safeguard ourselves?
Active transportation is the safest mode of transportation. Walking offers various health benefits, one of which is the ability to avoid pollution on busy highways, which has been shown to minimize exposure by 30–60 percent. If you live in London, it is important to plan your trips, research internet pollution maps for your neighborhood, and stay away from congested highways.
A few meters can make a considerable difference in the amount of pollution in the air, therefore you should avoid hotspots. Walking on the side of a pavement that faces a building rather than the side that faces the road, for instance, can cut one’s exposure by thirty percent. Keep a safe distance from the roadside if you are waiting to cross the street or for a bus, but this is especially important if you are pushing a stroller with a child who is breathing more toxic air because they are closer to the ground. Taxi stands and deeper tube lines have also been reported to have significant particulate levels. Other areas of heavy pollution include: (e.g Northern, Victoria and Central).
Reduce your influence on others: Idling cars can produce very high levels of emissions, which tend to concentrate in high-traffic areas like school drop-off zones. The ideal solution is to travel less miles, but if you must do so, please be courteous to other drivers and turn off your vehicles’ engines whenever you come to a stop.
Keep an eye on the pollution levels: The levels of pollution alter from day to day in the same locations, primarily due to changes in the weather. Download the Met Office and London Air Network apps on your phone so you can stay up to date with the latest forecast information. When levels are high, take extra precautions to prevent exposure to outdoor air pollution, and if you plan to exercise, attempt to do so outside of rush hour whenever possible.
Be mindful of those who are most at risk: the impact of pollution is greater on younger children, but high risk categories also include the elderly, newborns still developing in the womb, and people who suffer from asthma. Make sure that you increase the amount of effort you put towards reducing exposure for these groups. People who suffer from asthma experience short-term consequences from spikes in air pollution because they feel the impacts at lower levels. As a result, asthmatics require additional attention no matter where they are.
Is this the first time you’ve used Kickstarter to fund a project? Why did you decide to follow the route of crowdfunding rather than another option?
This is our first product aimed at the general public as well as our first project on Kickstarter. In what directions do you anticipate this technology developing over the next few years?
The concept of individual air purification is just one of the many areas that Airlabs and our technology cover. In addition, we manufacture street furniture for the purpose of establishing clean air zones within cities, and we intend to continue our research and development in order to one day establish clean air in neighborhoods or streets.
