Valencell has developed a cuff-like accuracy blood pressure sensor for smartwatches

Valencell unveiled new sensing technology for wearable devices at CES 2021. Smartwatches will be able to take blood pressure readings with the same accuracy as standard cuffs, with no need for calibration. This is wonderful news because it is something that has never been done before.

In a press release, Valencell claims that the technique works with PPG (photoplethysmography) sensors in the ear, wrist, or even finger tips. A PPG sensor shines green blinking lights into your body. By capturing reflected light, AI is able to determine blood flow patterns. Heart rate, heart rate variability, blood oxygenation, and breathing rate can all be calculated using this data.

Valencell has recently announced that the sensor technology has been updated to allow for more precise blood pressure readings. This is fantastic news. Unless you’re a manufacturer of traditional blood pressure cuffs, of course.

PPG data is combined with inertial sensor data and your physical attributes by the technology (age, weight, gender, and height). The end result is blood pressure readings that, according to Valencell, are just as accurate as those obtained with standard cuffs. Because there is no need for calibration, the sensor is ready to use right away!

We don’t know because the corporation hasn’t said, but we’re guessing the blood pressure readings are done on demand. Because of how measurements are acquired, it would be impossible to adopt automatic readings. Traditional blood pressure cuffs require users to sit still for 5 minutes before getting a reading, and the cuff must be placed at heart level.

Valencell employed machine learning techniques and tens of thousands of blood pressure readings to develop the blood pressure measuring algorithms. Clinical research appears to back up these claims of precision.

It was first revealed about this time last year, but just for in-ear devices. The functionality has recently been expanded to include other bodily parts.

What does this imply?

This means that keeping track of your blood pressure will become considerably easier in the near future. Hypertension is sometimes referred to as the “silent killer” because many of us are unaware that we have it. The first step is to recognise that you have the disease. Then it’s only a matter of making lifestyle changes to lower your blood pressure to safe levels.

Valencell has submitted the sensor technology to the FDA for clearance and is currently waiting for a response. It is anticipated to arrive in early 2021. If this is the case, we can expect the first gadgets to use the technology in the latter half of this year and early 2022.
