In 1936, Antonio Cremonese filed patent no. 343 230 with the certification of the method called "rubinetto a stantuffo per macchina da caffè espresso". In that same year Antonio Cremonese died and Achille Gaggia, bartender at the Achille bar in Viale Premuda in the center of Milan, bought the patent from his widow, improving it with his subsequent patents and starting the mass production of the machine, whose fundamental technical characteristics do not they've changed.

Its popularity began after World War II, although the coffee machine as we know it was developed in 1902 by Giuseppe Bezzera from Milan.
